Are you ready to witness the rebirth of Cartier’s legendary Tonneau case?
Cartier, one of the pioneers of the Tonneau shape cases, introduced the current version of this classic model in SIHH 2019. Tonneau, first introduced to the market in 1906 (two years after Santos, another legendary model), had a special fan base over the years. The models, in which the characteristics of rectangular and oval cases were blended, have been a top choice among the ones who wanted to be stylish and different.
Tonneau means barrel in French. If any watch model is called “round” today, I think many people might not want to buy that watch just because of its name. Somehow, this does not apply to Cartier. Luckily, it does not as we have the opportunity to review the latest version of one of the most special designs in the history of horology.
Cartier Tonneau is placed under the brand’s Prive Collection today. The Tonneau shaped case measuring 46.1mm x 26.2mm is curved to fit the wrist comfortably. This curve is observed not only in the case, but also in the case back, front sapphire crystal and even in the movement itself. The case is 8.8mm thick in the center but this value decreases through the lugs. The curved design boosts the wrist comfort and reinforces the unique character of the model.
Cartier Prive Tonneau has two different versions. An 18K pink gold case with blue sapphire winding crown (as we used to see in many Cartier models) and a 100 pieces limited edition Platinum case model with a red ruby added winding crown.
Cartier has included many ”vintage” inspired details in Prive Tonneau. Screwed horns, the dial and arms, which are designed from the baroque period, the stylish leather strap and buckle greet you as the user of the watch shows that the watch does not belong to this century.
Both models are powered by the manufacture Caliber 1917 MC. The hand-wound movement, which plays a significant role in the relatively thinner case with its 16mm x 12.9mm x 2.9mm dimensions, offers a power reserve of 38 hours when fully wound. Unfortunately, this mechanical artwork cannot be enjoyed while working due to the solid case back.
