Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition (Ref. H77796535), introduced to the likes of watch enthusiasts at Baselworld 2018, was the guest of our Hands On corner. Let’s take a close look at this limited edition model by Hamilton, which operates under Swatch Group and attracts great interest from many watcg aficionados with its relatively affordable timepieces.

Although there is not much change in the technical sense, it is possible to say that the thematic character of the model is reinforced with the addition of the chronograph feature. At the end of the day, we are talking about a classic pilot’s watch with "drift angle calculator" function and the lack of chronograph, of one of the most basic features of aviation, was more like a drawback.
The model, which comes with the Ref. H77796535 item No., is offered in a stainless steel case measuring 45mm in diameter. Although the watch case diameters are downsizing nowadays, 45mm is not an oversized diameter when words like pilot’s watch and tool watch come together. It is also possible to say that the total height of 14.85mm will not cause any problem in terms of wearing comfort even for thin wrists. The case is equipped by scratch-resistant sapphire crystals on both sides and is water resistant to 10 bars (100 meters).
It’s hard not to mention about the winding crowns and pushers while talking about the case. The left side of the case features a large winding crown for day, date and time adjustments. The right side of the case is equipped with a pair of winding crowns to control the discs used for the drift angle calculator function. This calculation, which is crucial for the pilots, can now be done digitally, having this function strapped to your wrist is impressive.
The dial arrangement of the model is not much different from the X-Wind style we are used to. The chronograph sub dials and the day/date display are placed in standard locations. The indicator located between the bezel and the dial contains the indices used for these calculations mentioned above.
The model is powered by the Caliber Ref. H-21-Si, which is based on the Valjoux 7750 self-winding chronograph movement that is manufactured by ETA under the Swatch Group. One of the most popular automatic chronographs of the watchmaking industry, this version of Valjoux 7750 is actually the first one equipped with a silicon balance wheel making it resistant to temperature changes and magnetic fields. C.O.S.C. certified movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers a 60 hour power reserve when fully wound.
The version we have here is offered on a beige thick calf leather strap which rivets, a complement for the classic pilot’s watch design. The model is also available with a metal bracelet as well. However, my preference would be the leather strap model which I believe is more suitable for the model’s visual appeal, despite the practical use of the bracelet.
The model is limited to a span of 1918 units only and is available with a MSRP of 2500.00 CHF through authorized Hamilton sales points. I believe Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition (Ref. H77796535) is an excellent alternative for the ones looking for a functional classic pilot’s watch with a relatively affordable price tag.
