As always, Baselworld hosted many new models from different brands which came forward with their innovative features. When it comes to Hublot, these types of models are always presented under the MP Collection which defines the brand’s peak level in terms of technological innovations. The latest member of this unique collection, Hublot MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis model, which was introduced at Baselworld 2017, was among the most exciting products of the exhibition.
We can say that the common feature of the models in the MP Collection is their “engineering marvel” sort of details. However, it is a bit hard to say the same for their visual designs.
Standing quite large with a 49mm case diameter, the MP-09’s case looks like stretched out standard Big Bang. Of course, this design issue has a purpose; Hublot’s first Bi-Axis Tourbillon escapement is located in this extended section at 6 o’clock. Watching the movement tick through section covered with sapphire crystals in three sides is simply fascinating.
There are three different versions in the new MP-09 series. The model we have for our review is titanium version. The new series also includes an 18K King Gold version and another titanium version paved with diamonds.
The winding crown is black rubber coated and located at 3 o’clock position of the case. The pusher at 9 o’clock position sets the date feature in a pretty unusual way. The pusher can be moved up and down which changes the date function a day forward or backwards per each push. The pusher, which attracts attention with the DATE engraving, matches nicely with the rest of the watch’s overall industrial design. On the user-facing side of the button, the words D + 1 and D-1 tell you about the use of the function.
Designed in a skeleton form, the dial is equipped with a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock and a pair of sub-dials for time display at the rest. Another detail that attracts attention when you look at the dial is "5 DAYS POWER RESERVE" writing. There is no doubt that the 5-day power reserve is one of the important features of the model, but it would have been better if it had not been spotted like the "10 YEARS BATTERY LIFE" statement on the Casio models sold for $ 50.00.
MP-09 is powered by the Caliber Ref. HUB9009.H1.RA designed and manufactured in-house exclusively for the model. With its Bi-Axis Tourbillon escapement and industrial lay-out, the movement looks more like an art piece. This is the first time Hublot uses a bi-axis tourbillion movement which are known with their perfect precision against the deviation occurred due to the gravitational force. If you are wondering how the movement looks like when it’s working, please see the video below.
The new model is offered on a black rubber strap attached to the case with an exclusive lug design. The strap is secured with a folding clasp that we are familiar with the rest of the Big Bang family.
Though I did not like the case design a lot, for a timepiece like Hublot MP-09, I think it’s better to leave the aesthetics-oriented interpretations such as beautiful or ugly to one side, as there will be those who like the design very much and those who do not like it at all. But what is certain is that Hublot engineers have done an excellent job both technologically and horologically.
Hublot MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis is limited to 50 units only with a price of 169,000 USD (USA list).
