The magnificent complication that Kurt Klaus brought to IWC, the perpetual calendar, is being adapted to the Portugieser series in its most recent form.
The perpetual calendar complication, included in the IWC product line by the master watchmaker and living legend Kurt Klaus back in the 1980s, comes to life with the Caliber 82000 family today and meets the elegance of the Portugieser collection.
Portugieser is one of the core collections of IWC. The form language of the series, which has stylish and elegant lines, is complemented by simple designs rather than sporty. The Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 model, which is the guest of our Hands-On corner, never compromises on its elegance despite the high complications it features.
The model has a 42.4mm x 13.8mm stainless steel case and, the number "42" in the name comes from the case diameter. IWC officials must have ignored the existence of the 0.4mm as they attributed such a name to the watch. The case features sapphire crystals on both sides and is water-resistant to 30 meters.
The pink gold details on the silver-plated dial match the model's overall design. There is a day indicator at 9 o'clock and a leap year display in this sub-dial. There are moon phase and month displays at 6, and date displays at 3 o'clock. There is no detail on the dial of the watch that increases the night legibility.
The model beats with the manufacture Caliber 82650. The self-winding movement with 326 parts/46-jewels ticks 4Hz (28.800vph) vibration per hour and offers a power reserve of 60 hours.
The IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42 comes with a black alligator strap produced by the famous leather manufacturer Santoni. An IWC signed stainless steel folding clasp secures the strap. The model offers a bold presence, which is more like a sports watch in terms of its size. On the other hand, its simple lines and stylish complication may appeal to gentlemen who love larger timepieces. The list price of the model is CHF 23,000.
