IWC, one of the indispensable names of pilot watches, introduced its new model inspired by the "Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor" (SFTI) program, which was commissioned to train fighter pilots for the US Navy.
The model we will talk about in a moment is not the first example of the collaboration between IWC and SFTI. The famous brand had previously designed a special model within the scope of this program that trains fighter pilots for the US Navy. However, this model was only given to Navy Fighter Weapons School graduates. The new model introduced today has found a place in the brand's current collection, yet as a limited edition.
IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition "SFTI" comes in a 44mm diameter and 15.7mm thick case. The bold looking case is made of matt black ZrO2 (zirconium oxide) ceramic alloy. On the front of the case, which is resistant to 60m water pressure, there is a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflection coating on both sides. Accompanying the case, the crown, chronograph buttons, and the case back are made of the brand’s patented Ceratanium® alloy, which incorporates the properties of titanium and ceramic materials. On the screw-in case back, a Top Gun logo is included, as well as information about the model.
The dial of the new model is also prepared in matte black, following the stealth theme dominating the design. In addition to the Tri-Compax chronograph function, the dial, which also includes day and date windows placed side by side, is accompanied by Super-LumiNOVA filled large numeral indices and wide hands. Both the red airplane figure attached to the lower part of the central second hand and the red hand used in the small second counter refers to the theme of the model and add a sporty feel to the design.
The model is powered by the brand's Caliber Ref. 69380 movement. 33-jewels automatic movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers up to 46 hours of power reserve when fully wound. The movement, which hosts hour, minute, second, day, and date functions as well as column-wheel chronograph feature, is also resistant to magnetic environments thanks to the soft iron cage placed inside the case.
IWC Top Gun SFTI Edition Ref. IW389104 comes with a khaki textile strap and a matte black buckle with the IWC logo. The new model is limited to 1500 units only.
