Hands On with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Réserve de Marche from the brand’s famous Master Collection.

When it gets to classic dress watches which bear a modern yet elegant presence, the first models we mostly recall are the Master Collection timepieces from JLC. Actually, this has two main reasons; First, Master Collection models, despite their classic appearance, feature a sporty character as well which makes them pretty versatile for almost every occasion. The second relates directly to the general design features of the brand. The models, featuring mostly classic but also very versatile looks, come with highly acclaimed complications, flawless workmanship and heavy testing, with highly praised standards.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Réserve de Marche model is one of the best examples of what I am counting on. Let’s take a closer look at the new model which we find the opportunity to see at the brand’s exhibition booth at SIHH 2017, which was spectacular especially with its distinctive illumination.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Réserve de Marche is, in fact, the updated version of the model that the brand added to its collection in 2012. Originally designed as 37mm, the case now measured 39mm in diameter for the new model. We can say that it is still a bit small for today’s standards, but also it is a fairly large for both the classic dress watch style and the Master Collection models. I would also like to add that it looks larger than it really is with the shortly designed lugs and the thin bezel.

The total thickness of the stainless steel case is set at 9.85mm. I am quite comfortable with a mechanical and relatively complicated model that does not sacrifice the definition of "thin", but also cannot help thinking that the "ultra" part is a bit pretentious.

It is possible to control all functions from the winding crown which is designed in a simple and compact form suited to the style of the model. The case sports sapphire crystals on both sides and it is water resistant to 50 meters.

In my opinion, the most crucial feature of the timepiece is its magnificent dial.  The dial is finished in an amazing blue tone that looks beautiful in every angle. The sub-dial lay-out is pretty simple. At 10 o’clock, there is a power reserve indicator in the shape of a cake slice. At 6 o’clock, the small seconds sub-dial is positioned. The date function of the model is shown by a round sub-dial located at 2 o’clock position.

I would like to talk about the hands and hour markers as well. JLC used "dauphine" style hands in this model. The hands, featuring matt and mirror polished sides, were accompanied by triangular shaped markers. Due to the relatively large surface area, the sub-dials are comfortably positioned, which also affects the legibility positively.

The model is powered by the in-house JKC Caliber Ref.938/1. Self-winding movement with 41 jewels and 273 parts beats at 28800vph and offers 43 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

The new model comes with a navy blue alligator strap designed to fit the dial and a signed stainless steel folding clasp.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Réserve de Marche is a very successful model that bears all of the symbol features of Master Collection series.

With its 39mm all mirror polished case, nicely added power reserve indicator and most importantly extraordinarily bright blue dial, I strongly recommend you to see the watch in person.
