The brand’s newest collection, Luminor Due, combines the Panerai spirit with a new, compact design concept. The result is full of surprises.

Although it is difficult for Panerai fanatics to accept it, it is undeniable that the brand is going through a radical change lately. Having a fan-base of its own with its simple and purpose-oriented designs, Panerai is sacrificing its loyal followers on the altar of reaching to a new customer profile. Let’s face it, we all knew that this would happen sooner or later. The brands that try to fit the world into a tiny case and a dial are forced to do the undone at some point. I congratulate Panerai for managing those winds of change so successfully. As you may have guessed, I am talking about the size thing!

Panerai is one of the few brands that have managed to take part in my collection for a long time. In this case, the effect of the brand’s commitment to the essence is absolutely undeniable. That’s why I always think that a true Panerai should come in a 47mm diameter case, just like 60 years ago. So what, non-47mm diameter ones are not true..? Of course, not. However, I think it is more important to preserve the historical values of the brand than changing it according to fashion trends and customer expectations.

Now, let’s have a look at what we have here. Panerai’s iconic case design is here with the thick, short lugs. In the meantime, let me add that I always find the Radiomir to be more comfortable than the Luminor. The unique crown guard is one of the brand’s signature details. But wait, it’s a 42mm case! Furthermore, with very smooth and elegant lines. Why? Obviously, for reaching to different markets and open a new page in brand’s well-established history. The problem is, I don’t think loyal Panerai customers will appreciate the Luminor Due Collection with design elements that contradict Panerai’s military theme. On the other hand, I believe that the same collection should definitely be evaluated by the new enthusiasts.

The sleek and stylish blue dial and the gold tone hands are in great harmony. Despite the small seconds indicator at the 9 o’clock position, the dial is still very simple.

The model is powered by the brand’s manufacture movement Caliber P.1000. 21 jewels hand-wound movement beats at a frequency of 21.600vph and offers a 72-hour (3 days) power reserve when fully wound. The movement is only 3.85mm thick and is equipped with a auto-reset feature that makes synchronizing the watch to an external time source easier by taking the small seconds hand to zero position when the winding crown is pulled.
