Oris Aquis GMT Date (Ref. 01 798 7754 4135-07 4 24 65EB)

Oris, one of the leading names for the entry to mid-level Swiss mechanical watches, is the guest of our pages with the Aquis GMT Date model that was introduced as a part of brand’s Baselworld 2019 novelties.

One of the results of the changes that took place in the world of luxury watchmaking in recent years was the increased interest to the entry and mid-level product groups. The crises happened in the luxury-consuming sector and the global economic changes increased the interest in the products in this segment so powerfully that even brands that do not sell products suitable for such price ranges came up with new collections in order to get a share from this booming market.

For Oris, this was a bit different because the brand was already one of the leading names in the entry and mid-level Swiss mechanical watches. The independent brand, which increased both product standards and the average price segment over time, did not abandon its place in Baselworld. The model we opted from the brand that participated in the recently ended trade show with many novelties is the Aquis GMT Date, which brings diver’s watch concept and frequent travelers’ favorite complication GMT feature together under the same roof.

The new model is part of Aquis Collection, one of the brand’s best-seller product groups. When we look at the aesthetic details of the model offered in a 43.50mm diameter stainless steel case, the basic design language of the collection is immediately evident. The bezel on the front side is made of ceramic. The bezel, which will never lose its brand new appearance due to the hard nature of the material, is black and engraved with a 24-hour scale in line with the model’s GMT feature. The front sapphire crystal is domed on both side. Despite the fact that the crystal is anti-glare coated inside, the magnifying glass effect is still visible. The case back features a mineral crystal see-through center part. With the help of the screw-in winding crown, the water resistance rating of the model is set at 300 meters / 30 bars, which is a decent figure even for a professional dive watch.

The version we opted for review is equipped with a cobalt-blue dial. The dial has a 24-hour scale in the center and a date window at 3 o’clock. GMT function is displayed via a yellow tipped hand in the dial that is accompanied with Super LumiNOVA BG W9 phosphor material applied hands and hour markers offering optimal legibility under any condition.

The new model is powered by the Caliber 798 movement. Based on the reliable Sellita SW 330-1, 25 jewels self-winding movement beats at 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers a power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound. The red oscillating rotor, a signature detail for the brand, is visible through the see-thru display case back.

With its design that does not compromise comfort despite the high water resistance rating, its successful movement that stands out with the additional GMT feature and with its nice-looking rubber strap, the model took its place in our archives as a brilliant alternative in its price range.
