Roger Dubuis Excalibur Diabolus in Machina

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Diabolus in Machina

Roger Dubuis reinterprets the Minute Repeater complication with both modern and visual elements.

The brand, which has spent its work on watchmaking in the last few years focusing on alternative and high-tech materials, gives the signals that it has maintained its line with the innovations it introduced on the Watches & Wonders 2020 platform.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the brand's establishment... In contrast to the brands that generally prefer to crown such important dates with new production versions of models from the past, RD preferred to celebrate this occasion with modern designs following its founder's vision. Excalibur Diabolus in Machina is a good example of this.

Minute Repeater is an auditory function, as many of us know. RD adds a visual dimension to this feature with the Excalibur Diabolus in Machina.

Let's take a brief look at the features of the model, shall we?

Expressing the design language we are familiar with from the Excalibur product line, the case is designed with a diameter of 45mm. The high-tech CarTech Micro-Melt BioDur CCMTM material was used in the construction of the case, which also includes the detail of the characteristic notched bezel. This material, which emerges from the composition of different materials, has become a choice that suits the modern identity of the model with its unique texture as well as its success in lightness and durability. The low water resistance value, (often) Achilles heel of exotic watches, goes for the case of the model, which is equipped with AR-coated sapphire crystals on both sides. The model is water-resistant to 30 meters only.

The dial of the model is designed in skeleton style. Blue and gray tones that blend with the lead color of the case material are expertly applied. Let's also underline that the dial, which does not fall below the average in terms of legibility, is home to Super-LumiNOVA phosphor material filled hands and markers for dark environments.

Besides its aesthetic integrity, the stylish dial also expresses the Minute Repeater function, which is the main feature of the model. When the function is activated, the disc that is placed at 11 o'clock with texts 'Hours', 'Quarters', and 'Minutes' rotates according to the melody. In this way, you can also read the visual response of the melody, which emphasizes the time, from the dial. Tourbillon balance, which is positioned slightly to the right from 6 o'clock position, should be added considering those who are not satisfied with a single classical complication.

The model beats with the manufacture Caliber RD107. In addition to the timekeeping function, the hand-wound movement hosts Flying Tourbillon, Minute Repeater, and 'melody indicator' functions. Proudly carrying the Hallmark of Genève seal, the movement offers 60 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

In the meantime, I should mention one more detail about the Minute Repeater feature of the model. The "Diabolus in Machina" in the model's name means "the devil in the machine". The famous triton chord, also known as Diabolus in Musica, is carried to your wrist thanks to the model's Minute Repeater function. I cannot say that it is the happiest (!) Minute Repeater melody I have ever heard, but I "respect the labor".
