Jack Heuer was the CEO of Heuer from 1962 to 1982, and when he introduced his Carrera collection in 1963, I wonder if he ever knew that he had created a milestones in the world of watches? It is obvious that having such a long history and everlasting popularity has been the dream of every watch brand, but a very few of them could achieve such success. Just like the TAG Heuer Carrera had its name written in letters of gold in the history of watchmaking.
TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber 16 Automatic Chronograph (Ref. CV201AP.FC6429), the guest of our Hands On corner, won my recognition for combining the classic and modern details mentioned above. The 41mm diameter polished stainless steel case makes you feel it is exactly the one you need in terms of size and style. Like if it was 1mm larger, all the charm of the model will be gone for good. The bezel is made of fine ceramic instead of the old aluminum/bakelite materials and equipped with a tachometer scale. Ceramic is a perfect material known for keeping its flawless appearance for many years. However, we should better not forget its fragile nature especially upon a hard enough impact. With the help of double anti-glare treated domed sapphire crystal and exclusively engraved case back, the case is water resistant to 100 meters.
Details like the glossy black dial, the white chronograph counters, the red accents, the perforated and red stitched leather strap prove that TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Automatic Chronograph (Ref. CV201AP.FC6429) is designed for motor sports enthusiasts.
The model is powered by the Caliber 16, which is based on the tested and approved ETA Valjoux 7750 self-winding chronograph movement. Caliber 16 beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers a power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound. Since the winding system of the Valjoux 7750 is uni-directional, the oscillating rotor can rotate freely at a great speed upon a sudden wrist movement which is known as the “Valjoux 775X wobble”. Personally, I don’t like this vibration, but getting a physical feedback from a machine like a wristwatch may be a pleasant feeling for some.
The version we have here comes on a black perforated calf leather strap that is adorned with red stitching and is secured by a TAG Heuer signed folding clasp made of stainless steel. What else could we ask for, right?
