TAG Heuer, one of the most recognized names when it comes to motorsports inspired watches, is under the spotlight one again with the all black themed Carrera Calibre 16 (Ref. CV2A84.FC6394).
Carrera is a model family that deserves not only mine but all watch enthusiasts’ respect by being a major part of Heuer’s 150-year history. The success of the brand mostly with its sporty models makes it one of the first brands that come to mind when it comes to chronograph watches. Today, we have the opportunity to review the values under the name Carrera through the Carrera Calibre 16 (Ref. CV2A84.FC6394) model we have here.
I have a lot of sympathy for those black-cased watches. Their sporty looks, their structures that are less radiant compared to bare stainless steel and their resistance to scratches due to their material properties further reinforces my interest. On the other hand, the slightly darker tone phosphor material that mimics the aged radium and tritium tones, create an extraordinary nostalgic atmosphere. The watches in which these two design elements co-exist, are quite attractive to me. Just like the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 (Ref. CV2A84.FC6394) model. The model comes in a 43mm diameter Grade 2 titanium case that is equipped with a bright black ceramic bezel. It is good thing to know that the frontal look of the model will keep its brand new look for years due to the scratch-resistant nature of ceramic. The sapphire display case back is also made of black PVD coated titanium like the case. The domed front sapphire crystal is double AR coated which guarantees a legible dial even under intense light. The case is water resistant to 100 meters.
The dial features black and beige details. Thanks to the vintage looking Super LumiNOVA phosphor material applied, the dial offers two different but beautiful images are captured in both day and night. The engravings on the bezel are the same in both color and font with the dial which is good for preserving the model’s visual integrity. The white day and date disks on the other hand breaks the color scheme positively while offering better legibility.
The model is powered by the Caliber 16 which is based on the famous ETA Valjoux 7750 movement as careful readers would already notice due to the dial lay-out. 21 jewels self-winding chronograph movement beats at a frequency 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers a power reserve of 42 hours in addition to its day and date indicators. To be honest, I would like to have a smoked sapphire crystal display case back to view the movement which has unfortunately offers nothing to be seen in detail in terms of visual appeal.
The model comes on a soft and comfortable aged calf leather strap that is secured by a TAG Heuer signed folding clasp made of black PVD coated titanium. The strap offers a comfortable use on average and above sized wrists. I think, TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 (Ref. CV2A84.FC6394) is a noteworthy model with its beautifully arranged color palette and relatively accessible price tag.
