The Battle of Lightness

The Battle of Lightness

This time, the limits of horology are being pushed to reach the lightest watch. Chinese manufacturer Ming raises the bar considerably with its LW.01 model.

Ming, a Chinese watch manufacturer, has an important place in the watchmaking industry even though it is a young brand. The brand, which takes its name from the Ming Dynasty that ruled China between 1368 and 1644, apparently aims to dominate the watchmaking industry in its own category.

Behind the Ming's characteristic case design are dials, hands, and carefully selected movements adorned with well-thought-out details. The LW.01 model, which is among the brand's novelties, has another unique argument in addition to all these features: It is the lightest mechanical wristwatch!

Since the aim is lightness, let's explain the weight of the watches from the beginning. Ming LW.01 has two versions: winding and automatic. The weights of the cases of the watches are 8.8gr and 10.8gr respectively. It is so light that you cannot feel its presence on your arm. To these values, you need to add 1.2gr for the Alcantara strap and 0.6gr for the buckle.

Every part used in the production of the watch has been handled with care and has been made lightweight without sacrificing durability and longevity. The watches will be delivered to their owners in the last quarter of 2024. The list price of both models is set at 19,500 CHF.

The dial-like structure of the watch was designed together with the movement holder, and this dual structure was fitted into a total thickness of 0.5 mm. The specific mass of the case, made of AL31 magnesium-aluminum-zinc-manganese alloy, is 1.77gr/cm3. The plasma electrolytic coating on the outside of the case is necessary for both durability and biocompatibility. The case diameter is 38mm. The crystal of the watch was produced by Corning, a company that also produces connected watches and mobile phones. The Gorilla Glass 6 model is covered with an additional hardened layer on the surface. Although this glass is not as hard as sapphire crystal, it is quite light compared to it. The screws are PEEK composite, the crown is anodized aluminum, and the list of high-tech materials used for the production of the watch is long...

The model is powered by ETA caliber 2000.M1 modified by Schwarz Etienne. The movement has a power reserve of 36 hours when fully wound. Due to the lug structure of the watch, it can only be used with a NATO-type strap. Strap options are provided by Jean Rousseau Paris.
