The memory of Brian May, the guitarist of the legendary band Queen, and his unforgettable guitar ‘Red Special' is carried to the wrists with Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition.
I'm too sensitive when it comes to Queen. I watch their concerts over and over again, know many of their songs by heart, and try to follow the surviving band members as best as I can. I still buy Queen T-shirts and keep the old ones. Those who know me know very well, if I had a time machine, the first place and time I would go would be the concert that the band took part in Hungary - Budapest in 1986. That concert has a different place for me.
When Queen's guitarist Brian May went to Japan for the first time in 1975, he bought the quartz-powered Seiko 7548 diver's watch. As far as we know, May is still in love with his 7548. The musician, who has a doctorate in astrophysics, could be interested in mechanical watches and wear any brand he wished. However, he chose to spend his life with his Seiko.
Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition is inspired by the musician's legendary guitar, known as the Red Special. Deciding to make his guitar when he was 16 years old, May used the boards he bought from an old fireplace for the chord part of the guitar, the buttons to mark the frets, and a sixpence to play the guitar. Naturally, it created a unique tone. May has been using his guitar since then.
Brian May Limited Edition comes in a 42.5mm diameter stainless steel case. The winding crown, which has two guards, is located at 4 o'clock. Even if the crown is not screwed in, the case is resistant to water pressure up to 100 meters. The bezel with aged gold numerals and markers is made of anodized aluminum. "Hardlex" is used for the crystal. The crystal display case back has May's signature.
The colors of the Red Special guitar find their way into the dial of the limited-edition model. You can see the waist curve of the guitar on the left and the grainy texture in the red area that imitates wood. The hands and markers have the same design as the other Seiko 5 models and have the brand's proprietary LumiBritte filling.
The Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition SRPE83K1 is powered by the brand's in-house automatic movement Caliber 4R36 and provides 40 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
Limited to only 9,000 units, the model is complemented by a black NATO strap, similar in color and texture to the strap used on Brian May's guitar. The watch is delivered in a special box that looks like a black guitar case with metal rivets. Inside the box is a commemorative coin of sixpence, with Brian May's profile on one side and a guitar embossed on the other.
