The concept of personalizing the items we use by engraving our name, our initials, or that special date on them is something that has been in our lives for a very long time. However, when it comes to luxury watches bought with very high budgets, we cannot be as comfortable as when we print letters on the cuffs of that custom-tailored shirt that we will wear for three seasons at most. So, what's the secret to getting this job done properly? Let’s have a look...

First of all, your watch must be suitable for personalizing with this kind of engraving. If we are talking about a Rolex here, it is easy as the closed and plain case backs of Rolex models look like they are meant to be engraved. Another excellent alternative for this job is Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. You can get an engraving at the closed back of the model, which is among the most iconic designs in the history of watches with its reversing case, according to your wishes. The good thing is, when you want to see (or show) this engraving, all you have to do is slide the case slightly to the side and flip it over. Let us add that NOMOS provides this service free of charge for some of its timepieces.

Of course, it is useful to remind you that not every watch is suitable for this process. For example, if you have a watch with a sapphire crystal case back, engraving is much more difficult than metal. A skilled craftsman can handle this with a laser-tipped pantograph, though, but it's still best not to take risks.

So, let's move on to the next step, considering that you have chosen or bought the appropriate watch; What to write? Our advice here would be to avoid too long texts. In an area that is already quite limited, we don't think it is necessary to have the first verse of that poem you love so much🙂 An important date for you, initials of your name, a short note about the person to whom you will gift the watch or even a reminder to yourself... Just keep it short.

Another detail about the engraving is of course the font choice. If you trust your craftsman (and, of course, you like it too), elegant handwriting is the best option in our opinion. Apart from that, you can also choose a font that is timeless, stylish, and dignified. It is useful to stay away from typewritten letters because it will be a choice that will not go beyond making the whole thing dull and generic.

Apart from these, it is useful to take into account some special matters, too. Like making sure you don't sell the watch you have its case back engraved. If you try to sell it like that, you may experience a significant price loss. It is also the case that over time, the meaning of the text you have chosen changes for you or loses its meaning. Although not as much as getting a tattoo, you should better consider this, too🙂

A wristband, lighter (if you still haven't quit smoking), cigar cutter, pen, cufflink, key chain, and even the back cover of your mobile phone... It is also possible to personalize different personal items that you want to match with your watch. This is entirely up to you.
