We are breaking into the blue with high technology. Omega’s new Planet Ocean model, introduced at Baselworld 2017 fair, fascinated the marine enthusiast with its blue ceramic case used for the first time and orange details.
Omega Planet Ocean shines out as a more focused line of the Seamaster collection. In the newly introduced model, both the design and the technological heritage of the brand have benefited abundantly.
The 45.5mm diameter, solid blue ceramic case has a very imposing stance on the wrists thanks to its lug design. Ceramics began to find more space in the watch industry in recent years. It is lighter than its counterparts and is resistant to scratches at advanced levels, which is enough for the material to stand out. On the other hand, the possibility of getting cracked when exposed to hard impacts can be a nightmare for every watch enthusiast.
The bezel, which is one of the essential features of the diver’s watch, is made by Omega’s patented LiquidMetal technology. Rubber is preferred for the orange markers of the first 15 minutes on the bezel. I do not like the use of rubber in watch parts except the strap, because the indication of wear over time is very visible. I hope Omega has found a solution to this problem. I do not care about the strap as it is a piece that needs to be replaced at certain intervals.
The mirror polished blue dial is accompanied with white gold hands and indices. Of course, all the indices and hands are equipped with SuperLuminova from top to bottom.
The model sports scratch resistant sapphire crystals on both sides. The crystals are anti-glare coated in and out improving the visibility but being prone to scratches leaves a question mark over minds. The model’s waterproof rating is limited to 600 meters as in other models of the series. Of course, a helium valve was added to the 7 o’clock position to provide safe return from this depth.
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Big Blue is powered by the brand’s in-house Caliber Ref.8906. I must congratulate Omega especially about their success regarding movements as they manufacture the industry’s most impressive standard and chronograph movements. Master Chronometer certified movement is capable of withstanding 15,000Gauss magnetic flux with its anti-magnetic property. Moreover, a Faraday cage is not needed for that durability. The self-winding movement features GMT and date functions among time keeping and offers 60 hours power reserve when fully wound.
The strap is also exclusively designed and manufactured for the enthusiasts of the sea, just like the case. Easy use and comfort are combined in the blue rubber strap with orange details. The strap is secured by folding clasp made of blue ceramic. There’s also an anti-bacterial coating on the inner side of the strap.
I must admit that one of the most successful brands of Baselworld 2017 was Omega for me. I especially loved the 1957 Trilogy and the new Railmaster models. Planet Ocean Big Blue will surely be one of the models that should definitely be evaluated in its category. With reference code 215.92.46.22.03.001, it will be possible to reach the new model in Omega boutiques by October.
