Lake Baikal, estimated to have formed about 25-30 million years ago, is one of the oldest lakes in the world. The lake, which has a depth of 1,642 meters, contains 20 percent of its freshwater reserves and more than 50 percent of our planet's potable liquid and freshwater. Anastasia Tsvetkova, CEO of the Lake Baikal Foundation, explains how important it is for the lake by saying, “It is a unique water reproduction factory”, not only for humankind but also for the planet earth. The lake, home to thousands of endemic plant and animal species, is now threatened with man caused pollution.

Today the world is burdened with multiple catastrophes. Pollution, global warming and species extinction change many balances. Tsvetkova says that for 70 years, the temperature of the lake has increased by one degree Celsius, and she lists several factors that threaten Lake Baikal as “nutrient inputs from tributaries; inputs from the atmosphere; and anthropogenic impact from tourism, sewage and local pollution.”

To protect the water, Oris designed the Lake Baikal Limited Edition model in collaboration with the Baikal Lake Foundation. The sale of the watch will help raise funds to support “Point No.1”, the most detailed environmental water-monitoring project, conducted since 1945 by the Irkutsk State University Biological Scientific Institute.
