If there was a golden age of diving watches, that should be the 1960s. At that time, scuba diving has been known for like 20 years at most and diving watches had a history of fewer than 10 years when Rado introduced its Captain Cook model. However, there was no significant feature that differentiated Captain Cook from the others; rotating bezels, time and date features were available at almost every diving watch. In the mid-1960s, many brands from Ulysse Nardin to Oris had their own diving watch model. Rado named his own dive watch after the famous British explorer Captain James Cook. The original Captain Cook model, however, did not attract much attention, nor stayed in the brand’s catalog for a long time.

Produced only between 1962 and 1968, Captain Cook made a quick re-introduction to the life of watch enthusiasts at Baselworld in 2017. The model, carrying the DNA of the original, was able to gather the appreciation of many watch aficionados as well as authorities. As of 2019, Captain Cook is again with us in four different models, one of which is a limited edition.

Captain Cook Automatic Limited Edition comes with a 37mm stainless steel case like the original model. As with the 1960s models, there are three embossed seahorse figures on the case back. The uni-directional bezel features a scratch-resistant ceramic insert. The model is water resistant to 100 meters / 10 bars. The first noticeable detail in the model’s brown dial is the date window at 3 o’clock. The red fonts on the date disc and sword-shaped hands are among the details that tribute to the original Captain Cook model. The front face features a sapphire crystal. The model’s self-winding movement, Caliber C07, shines with its efficient 80-hour power reserve.
