Rolex's new classic model Perpetual 1908 promises much more than its predecessor, the Cellini.
Rolex's classic series Cellini was discontinued and a brand new watch was introduced in its place: Perpetual 1908. The new model, besides being a game-changer for Rolex, also draws attention by presenting classic and modern details in the same design.
First of all, let's take a look at the details that contribute to the name and design of this model. According to the records, the brand, which started its activities in 1905 with the name Wilsdorf and Davis, was registered under the name Rolex in Perpetual 1908. In 1931, as a first in the industry, the automatic movement with a 360-degree rotor was introduced under the name Oyster Perpetual. In other words, the roots of the watch inspired by the Perpetual 1908 model were laid 92 years ago.
The luxury and classic watch category appeals to a high-end audience, limited to cult models of brands that have engraved their names in the history of watchmaking with gold letters. It is a bold and exciting development for me that Rolex is attempting to make a presence in this segment as well. The feeling you have when you wear the Perpetual 1908 on your wrist is a little different from the classic Rolex experience.
The absence of the bracelet, which is one of the best assets of Rolex, creates both surprise and admiration. Fortunately, the Perpetual 1908 stands before us as if it proves that every component is thought through and no detail is left to chance. Every detail from Perpetual 1908, from the serrated pattern on the bezel and the case back to the cleverly designed buckle, from the circle on the hour hand to the movement craftsmanship, reveals Rolex's perfectionism.
The Perpetual 1908 comes in a classically designed case measuring 39mm x 9.5mm, available in 18K yellow or white gold. The front and back of the 50-meter water-resistant case, sport scratch-resistant sapphire crystals. While the characteristic hands and indices on the dial are appreciated for their excellent finishing, they do not contain any phosphorus application.
The model comes with a see-through case back, which is quite unusual for the brand, and ticks with the manufacture Caliber 7140. The 38 jewels automatic movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800vph) and offers up to 66 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
The Rolex Perpetual 1908 is secured to the wrist with an alligator strap and a double-sided folding clasp called Dualclasp.
The Perpetual 1908 stands out with its details that go beyond the brand's usual understanding of innovation and design elements that bring Rolex's glorious past to the present. Time will tell how preferable it is in terms of the limited customer profile it addresses.
