The new Rolex Air-King, which was re-launched at Baselworld 2016 after a two year break, finally got to the stores. We have paid a short visit to the biggest Rolex dealer in Turkey – Rhodium for a full review and brief information.
The importance of the Rolex Oyster, which joined the legendary flight over the Mount Everest in 1930s, is undeniable. The “Air” series started in 1930s which are considered as the golden years of aviation, moved on with different variants like Air-Lion, Air-Giant, Air-Tiger and finally Air-King. The only model managed to survive is the Air-King which was first launched in 1945.

While I was looking at the Rolex booth at the Baselworld 2016, I and my friends had a little shock. If I hadn’t noticed the classic Air-King logo from the 1950s, I would possibly have a hard time identifying that new model. The main reason for that confusion is the case diameter beefed up to 40mm instead of the Air-King’s signature 34mm.
The new Air-King which featured a sportier-than-ever look was one of the most important updates of Rolex besides the Cerachrom bezel stainless steel Daytona.
When we got the news that Rhodium had the Air-King on stock, we went to the company’s headquarters to see this new timepiece in person once more and to arrange a detailed review about it. Together with Rhodium’s experienced executives, we had brief information about the upgrades regarding the new version.
Frankly speaking, I thought Air-King was discontinued for good however, as the Rhoidum guys tell the same; it was only a short break to make the Air-King a better and more desirable model for the modern luxury watch market.
When we take a look at the new version, the most important update is the case which is re-sized from 34mm to 40mm and upgraded with anti-magnetic structure. We all agree on the black dial being the perfect choice for a model which has been initially designed as a professional, masculine timepiece. The new Air-King features an amazing wrist presence thanks to its optimal case diameter and lively dial.
We all know that Rolex is very strict about its past and traditional designs. Therefore we all believe that we will not see those kinds of radical upgrades on any model for a long time.
The signature big 3,6,9 numerals are present on the new version’s dial. The minute indices are also nicely placed on the dial thanks to the bigger space provided by the 40mm diameter.
There is one important detail that I missed but then informed by the Rhodium guys: The new Air-King is the first Rolex watch featuring yellow and green colors on the same dial ever. Well, we all know that the firsts are always important for Rolex timepieces.
The Oyster bracelet is a very good choice for the new Air-King. Featuring the EasyLink clasp which allows the user to micro-adjust in 5mm clicks, the new Air-King is as comfortable as always.
The new Air-King is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3131. The automatic movement offers 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound and comes with COSC certification for accuracy.
I have to say that I was not that impressed when I first saw the watch at Baselworld 2016 however my thoughts have been changed positively after this short review. The new Air-King is a perfect timepiece with a lot of history, unique design and a nice price tag of 5.550 EUR. It may be shadowed by the ceramic bezel stainless steel Daytona at Baselworld 2016 but it’s truly a magnificent timepiece and Rhodium’s long waiting list proves that I am not the only one thinking that way.
