Urwerk, which adopts the principle of pushing the limits of mechanical watchmaking with advanced technology materials as well as alternative forms of display, is under the spotlight with UR-111C, one of its peak models in this regard.
Urwerk is a name that deserves to be called exotic. Under the leadership of its founders, Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner, the brand continues to produce the extra ordinary timepieces of mechanical luxury watchmaking.
The UR-111C is extra ordinary in its own among luxury watchmaking. However, it is extra ordinary for Urwerk as well as it sports a different time display style instead of the orbital satellite method that we have seen in the brand’s previous creations.
The front of the model has two conical shaped indicators. Jumping hour indicator is located at the left side while the minute counter is present at the right. Let me add that this minute counter is also equipped with retrograde function. In addition to these two indicators, there is a digital seconds indicator located on the top side. It is impossible not be fascinated by watching the timepiece work.
The Urwerk UR-111C is available in two different case options. The version I chose for my review is the model with the matt surface application, which is called Gun Metal on stainless steel. Selecting an even more bizarre version of such a model that is extremely strange? Yes, that’s me...
The case measures 42mm x 46mm x 15mm and is water resistant to 30 meters / 3 bars. Obviously, wrist comfort is not the strongest feature of this interesting case. However, I would also like to mention that it is much more comfortable model than I expected in both size and material.
The model is powered by the manufacture Caliber UR-111C. 37 jewels self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and offers up to 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound. The functions are jumping hours, retrograde linear minutes, digital minutes and digital seconds. Despite all its ultra-modern features, the movement is decorated with circular graining, sanding, Côtes de Genève and polished screw heads.
In addition to its alternative time display style, Urwerk offers the same with the winding/adjusting feature as well. You will notice that there is no traditional crown to speak of. Instead, there are a pair of mechanisms. To wind up and adjust the watch you use the cylindrical roller that is set into the top of the case and the lever that is hidden out of the right side of the case.
The Urwerk UR-111C version I selected for the review comes with a black Kevlar strap that matches with the overall theme. The strap is secured by an Urwerk signed pin buckle.
Urwerk UR-111C is available in two versions: stainless steel and Gun Metal stainless steel. The models, which are limited to 25 each, are offered with CHF 130,000 price tags.
