Zenith is under the spotlight with its Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date Full Open model, which was added to the product line in 2017 and is well acclaimed for its skeleton style dial, as well as its gracefully crafted moon phase indicator.
The model was introduced as a part of the brand’s Baselworld 2017 novelties under the legendary El Primero product line. Considered as a perfect example for the brand’s new philosophy under Jean-Claude Biver’s management, the model comes to the forefront with its beautifully designed moon phase disc.
Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Grande Date Full Open comes in a stainless steel case that is designed relatively smiliar to Hublot’s Big Bang Collection which became a cult model family thanks to the brilliant leadership of Jean-Claude Biver. The case measures 45mm in diameter and 15.6mm in height. Offering a bold wrist presence due to its thick satin finished lugs, the case is equipped with anti-reflection treated scratch resistant sapphire crystals on both sides and is water resistant to 100 meters / 10 bars compatible with light water activities. A pair of chronograph pushers and the winding crown is located at the right side of the case while a recessed button used to adjust moon phase function is present at 4 o’clock position.
Open Works style dial of the model offers an industrial look thanks to the simple finish of the movement components. Small seconds sub-dial is located at 9 o’clock and the 30min chronograph counter is present at 3 o’clock. The moon phase indicator, which features a pair of discs, is located at 6 o’clock. One of the discs is used for moon phase feature while the other is assigned for day/night indicator. Despite being a little too traditional for such a contemporary dial, the moon phase disc is elegantly colored and still is the most striking feature of the model. Skeleton style date display is present at 2 o’clock.
The model is powered by the manufacture El Primero 4047B. Self-winding movement beats at 5Hz (36.000vph), a signature detail for the El Primero model family, and offers a 50-hour power reserve when fully wound. Featuring an exclusively designed oscillating rotor, the 332 parts movement is resistant to magnetic fields and temperature changes thanks to its silicon lever and escape-wheel.
The version we have here for the review comes on a black alligator strap that is secured by a Zenith signed stainless steel triple folding clasp. There is also a stainless steel bracelet option for the model in the current collection.
