Traditional chronographs use the same balance and gear train for time-keeping and chronograph functions. While the time-keeping function is in progress, the user starts the chronograph and the corresponding gears move to their assigned positions to ensure the operation of the system. The additional load on the procedure that commences with the start of the chronograph function can cause instant deviation in the balance amplitude. As a result, any intervention to the chronograph may also affect the accuracy. Zenith’s solution for that problem is both genius and very stylish. But before I go to the details of the movement, I would like to start with the case that deserves my utmost respect.
Zenith Defy Double Tourbillon comes in a forged carbon case measuring 46mm x 14.5mm. Although the size of the case is large on paper, it does not cause any lack of comfort. Designed to withstand 100 meters / 10 bar water pressure, the case is equipped with sapphire crystals on both sides.
On the left side of the dial, there are two Tourbillon balances responsible for time keeping and chronograph functions. At 12 o’clock, position is where the power reserve indicator for the chronograph is located. Chronograph minute counter is placed at 3 o’clock and the small seconds is at 6 o’clock.
Now let’s get to the movement. The model is powered by the fully manufacture Caliber 9020. 59 jewels/311 parts self-winding movement, which is COSC certified as well, measures 35.8mm x 7.8mm. Despite not being a compact movement at all, Caliber 9020 is truly a success for being packed with all those features. The movement have two separated escapements. The one for the time-keeping function beats at 36.000vph, while the one for the chronograph feature does its job at 360.000vph. Words fail to express the joy of watching the 1/100 seconds chronograph and the Tourbillon rotating around itself in that speed. The upper Tourbillon rotates 12 times per minutes and the lower one do one rotation per minute, both creating a visual feast for the wearer. In the meantime, the power reserve is 50 hours when fully wound. However, chronograph can work continuously for 50 minutes only.
Zenith Defy Double Tourbillon is available with a blue/black rubber strap and a folding clasp made of titanium and carbon. Limited to a span of 50 units only, the model combines hi-end luxury watchmaking with sportiveness.
In the platinum case (Ref. 40.9000.9020 / 78.R582) version, limited to 10 models, rhodium-plated, faceted and Super-LumiNova filled markers and rhodium-plated, Super-LumiNova-filled and faceted gold hands are used. The watch is complemented by a black alligator strap with rubber lining that is secured by a folding clasp made of titanium and white gold.
