Tudor Black Bay P01 (Ref. M70150-0001)

Tudor was among the stars of this year’s Baselworld with the new P01 model that was added to the highly acclaimed product line Black Bay. The new model is inspired by a prototype designed by the brand for the US Navy in the late 1960s.

The brand, which had the leading role in one of the most epic comebacks in the world of watchmaking with the Black Bay model family, introduced a new Heritage concept model once again to the likes of vintage watch lovers. Here we have the model, which became the center of attention in a short time, under the spotlight for you...

When the calendars showed the year 1967, Tudor designed a new prototype for their long-term customer US Navy. Officially called Project Commando, the new model has been designed to replace the standard-issue Ref. 7928 Oyster Prince Submariner. The new model was designed in accordance with the US Navy’s requirements back then which included a better-protected crown, a bidirectional bezel, and locked spring bars. However, it never got beyond the prototype stage as it was found excessively technical. For the record: Tudor still owns two of the five prototypes produced.

The well-known brand that wants to continue its success with the models prepared according to the Heritage concept, has added a new model among its Baselworld 2019 novelties that is inspired by this interesting prototype.

Tudor Black Bay P01 (Ref. M70150-0001) comes in a 42mm diameter stainless steel case, all made of matt surfaces. One of the most noticeable elements of the case is the screw-lock winding crown, which is located at 4 o’clock. The winding crown that is supported by thick guards evoking the Seiko SKX series models is such an interesting coincidence (!).

The similarity of the case with the prototype model continues at different points. The unique end links lock the bi-directional bezel via the end link at 12 o’clock side in order to eliminate the risk of being affected by external factors. The end link at the 6 o’clock position is fixed. The case upgraded to 42mm from the prototype’s 40mm diameter does not offer a problem in terms of comfort. However, it is difficult to say the same for the end links, as these parts increase the overall length of the case.

The domed sapphire crystal used on the front of the case is a successful element that reinforces the retro design. With an effective water pressure rating of 200 meters / 20 bars, the case is equipped with a solid stainless steel case that evokes the Rolex models with plain centers.

The dial of the new model still shows similarities with the prototype model. The original model uses the so-called Mercedes-style handles, while the new model has the Snowflake hands, offering a more suitable image for the retro design. Super LumiNOVA phosphor material applied frameless markers and red depth value text took place in the dial as the details emphasizing retro vibes of the model.

The most important modern detail of the model is undoubtedly the movement within. Tudor Black Bay P01 is powered by the manufacture Caliber MT5612 movement. COSC certified self-winding movement beats at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph) and offers up to 70 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

Tudor Black Bay P01 comes on a black rubber base with a snowflake motif and brown calf leather up. The strap is secured by a Tudor signed satin-finished folding clasp made of stainless steel.

Using the model with a Tropic strap as in the prototype can be a solution for obtaining a more retro image. However, it is important to note that the extra length of the characteristic end links can cause an uncomfortable presence with the standard length aftermarket straps.

Tudor Black Bay P01 (Ref. M70150-0001) will be available with a list of CHF 3,750. If you like the Heritage concept, and especially the Tool Watch style dive watches, you will probably like the Tudor Black Bay P01 as well. However, we recommend you to try it on your wrist, as the wrist comfort is not one of the prominent features of the model.
